Two Sowell Gray Members Certified as Circuit Court Mediators
Friday, September 11th, 2009Sowell Gray Stepp & Laffitte LLC members Cal Watson and Grady Beard have been certified as Circuit Court Mediators by the South Carolina Board of Arbitrator and Mediator Certification.
Mediation is a process in which an impartial, neutral third-person helps two or more parties resolve their dispute or conflict. As mediators, Cal and Grady will help disputants reach resolution of their problems and will also assist the parties in discussing and resolving their differences. (more…)
Sowell Gray Lawyers Take to the Streets to Help Keep Columbia Clean

Farm Supplier Wins Breach-of-Contract Dispute

Brief statement of claim: Plaintiff, a farm and chemical supplier, alleged that he entered into a consignment and sales contract with defendants whereby defendants agreed to accept and sell plaintiff’s product and then repay plaintiff for the portion sold. The plaintiff claimed that the defendants failed to pay plaintiff for product received and sold. The plaintiff sued to collect the amounts he claimed the defendants owed pursuant to the consignment and sales agreement, a promissory note as well as a guaranty signed by the individual defendant. Success in transferring Pennsylvania case to SC
Wednesday, July 8th, 2009A federal judge in Pennsylvania has transferred to the South Carolina district court a case challenging the Municipal Association of South Carolina’s practice of collecting business license taxes on flood insurance premiums, ruling that the public interest favors transfer to the state that authorizes the tax at issue. Sowell Gray Obtains Dismissal for South Carolina Man in W.R. Grace Criminal Trial
Monday, June 8th, 2009Sowell Gray lawyers obtained a dismissal for its client, William J. McCaig, a former manager at a W.R. Grace mine in Libby, Montana. McCaig, now a South Carolina resident, along with six other former employees and W.R. Grace, was charged with conspiring to knowingly violate the Clean Air Act and to defraud the United States government. After spending ten weeks presenting its case to a jury in Missoula, Montana, prosecutors determined that they did not have enough evidence to proceed any further against William J. McCaig. The prosecution moved to dismiss the case against McCaig with prejudice and the motion was promptly granted by the trial judge, allowing McCaig and his lawyers to leave the courtroom on the morning of April 30th. Columbia attorney J. Calhoun Watson will be installed as a member of the South Carolina Bar Board of Governors on Thursday, May 14, during the Bar’s House of Delegates meeting at the Poinsett Club in Greenville.
Watson is a partner in the Columbia law firm of Sowell Gray Stepp & Laffitte, LLC, practicing in the areas of commercial litigation, class actions and professional negligence. He was previously a clerk to the Hon. Robert F. Chapman, Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. He is admitted to practice before the Fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina. He graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1987. (more…)
